Hi! I'm Liz and I am a 38 year old teacher from Las Cruces, New Mexico. I'm also a fan of mountain biking, road biking, running, and traveling. I'm always up to try something new! This blog is for me to share ideas and also to receive new ideas!

Race Critique of High Altitude Race 2012

So I want to critique myself after my last race in Cloudcroft.  I really want to write down what I was thinking during a race, but I always forget.  I really suggest to anyone that you keep a notebook of any kind of racing you do.  I really regret not doing that the past three years.
The HUGE thing I regret is not practicing for the race. One week of training is not enough.  This winter I was really behind on riding.  I felt lke I lost a whole year of riding and I know in any situation its quicker to lose your abilities faster than you gaining an athletic ability.
It started out great.  I pushed really hard, but the race had a lot of uphill.  I am glad I stayed at the front of the pack, but I really think I should have backed off a little just to make sure my legs didn’t burn out.  Believe it or not (if anyone knew how I rode), I was better on the downhill than the uphill.  I am known for my hill climbs, but I think I was having a hard time because I pushed too hard.
This is what I looked like at the end.  Hot.  Zipper down on my jersey.  Out of breath. Fish face (see Fitness Topics). And not happy.
But hey, I was second in my category at least.

Easter Pictures 2012

I got way behind on blogging…so here goes our Easter pictures.
The annual dog terrorizing bunny ears picture.  He looks so tortured…

We had a small handful of candies just to keep us from going crazy, but man its good!

My new H&M sweater (courtesy of my Vegas trip) and the Cub.

                                                                Happy Easter Everyone!

Moab Trip April 2012

The boys went later this year to Moab to try and get some warmer weather and they were pretty lucky!
Here is the crew (both Alpha and Bravo groups)…
They were able to stay a little longer and of course got some awesome scenery shots!
 Greta shot of Mike!
The new trail called the Magnificient 7!

Aguirre Springs Practice

Mike and I took a little trip to Aguirre Springs on our bikes to practice for the road race. Road biking is so hard!  Aguirre takes no prisoners!
Mike taking a rest and making it look easy!
Cool shot of the road back.  I was having a hard time with the downhills.  I did learn on race day that I do bette ron downhill when I have a group of people to chase!

Trifecta Omnium in Las Cruces

Kind of bummed we didn’t get a lot of pictures of the local road race here.  Mike was able to place fifth in the time trial and rocked it, even though it was SNOWING while he did it.  He had to unclip at the turn and we think he would have placed higher if his turn was smoother.
This is the picture of the crit race, the same day.  He was able to stay with the team and Zia Velo came in for a win for the Category 5 racers!
This was my first road race on my road bike and it took place in Hillsboro, NM (about an hour and a half outside of town)…we seriously did not get a single picture of that day!  Mike paced 25th and I placed 12th.  I was riding by myself for half of the 32 miles I rode, so I was hurting!
Good times.  I would do it again!

Mike’s Birthday Weekend

I was going to be in Vegas for Mike’s birthday and I felt a little bad so I decided to make a special weekend for him in Las Cruces.  We decided to have a “staycation” and stay at a nice Holiday Inn Express here in town.  It ain’t no Mandalay Bay, but it was pretty nice and had an awesome hot tub and work out room!
Mike was able to hot tub before watching “The Walking Dead” finale and then we went out for ice cream right after.  The next morning I made an appointment for him to get a massage at Massage Envy.
Staycations rock!

High Altitude Classic

It’s the night before the first mountain bike race of the season for me and I can’t sleep.  I usually am not that nervous, but I didn’t practice a lot over winter and feel like I went down a whole category in my riding skills.  Tomorrow’s race is going to be hard. Period.

Picture four massive hills, which includes one long jeep road that climbs 1000 feet up and then takes you through a campground and then up more hills.  And then picture doing it twice.  I guess thats what I get for moving up from Cat 3 beginner to Cat 2 Sport.

My goal is to get top three.  Here’s hoping.

X Files?

I know its hard to tell from the picture, but for two nights straight, the dog’s in our neighborhood have been barking nonstop. Since Mike’s been out I’ve been a lot more paranoid about what’s going on outside. So last night I went to check and see what they were barking at. When I looked outside, there was a light going across the sky (like a plane or helicopter) and then it just STOPPED in its place. It stayed in the same spot for about five minutes straight and got brighter and then dimmer.

Eventually after thirty minutes of spying on it, it moved behind the houses behind us and then it was never seen again. Hmm….aliens?

Leg Anyone?

Today we took a quick ride around the race course in Cloudcroft. In two weeks the High Altitude race will be held and well, I am a little rusty. Mike was showing me the ropes on where I need to go and I was starting to feel more confident on the bike!

This pleasant looking thing was found at the bottom of the most bombing part of the trail…Bailey Canyon! I was a little disgusted by it until Mike picked it up and then I was REALLY disguested by it!

First Entry On The Blog!

This picture is a year old but I thought I would post it anyway, since our dog is not getting any bigger ( I took him to the vet yesterday and pretty much he is going to stay at his 61 pounds). I blame it on his parents and Mike. His parents are 60 and 80 pounds, which is highly unusual for a labrador retriever. As for Mike, he was the one to choose him. He liked that he looked fiesty.

I am totally teasing about the blame. We would not change anything about our precious Barney! (Can you tell from all the pictures posted??)

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Easter. I am so grateful to be able to have this holiday and to remember the true meaning of it!
