About thefasteryoupedal

Hi! I'm Liz and I am a 38 year old teacher from Las Cruces, New Mexico. I'm also a fan of mountain biking, road biking, running, and traveling. I'm always up to try something new! This blog is for me to share ideas and also to receive new ideas!

Socorro, NM

This past weekend was spent in good old Socorro, NM. A very small town between Las Cruces and Albuquerque. It was a two day race extravaganza which involved some river riding, rain, fog, heat, and lots of dust!

The first race was a hill climb at South Baldy Point. To get to the starting line, there was a flooded river to get across. People had to decide to carry their bikes or to just ride through it. When the race started, you had to cross the river two more times on the way up.

Because of the rain and snow, the race was shortened from 8 miles to 5.5 miles, which was a huge relief for all the beginners and not so great for people like Mike who actually enjoy the torture of long distance hill climbs.

Mike made it to the top in just under an hour. I made it up in an hour and nineteen minutes! It was a success. Mike got second in his really big sports category and I got first by twenty seconds.

The next day consisted of a cross country race down at a lower elevation, which means no snow or rain. The starting line is actually found on youtube.com. If you type in “Tour of Socorro 2010” you can see Mike starting right up front on the sports start and you can see me false start when the beginners take off. Haha.

Mike got fifth place and second place overall and I got first place beginner and first place overall.

It was a successful weekend!

Most Traumatic Day….Ever.

Once upon a time, Mike and Liz tried riding their bikes eight miles up the side of a mountain. Mike decided to use really small tires.

The ride was very smooth and steady and it took about an hour and half to reach the top (for Mike) and about an hour and forty five minutes to reach this point (for Liz).

We were so happy to reach the top!

As they took this picture…the wind picked up!

And Mike didn’t have a jacket!

So they rushed down the hill as fast as they could! Wind blowing and all! It was so cold that their hands turned blue and they could hardly hit the brakes! Mike’s skin was turning purple. Just a reminder: It is eight miles down! Half way down through the wind and the cold, Liz hits a sheet of ice and lands on her side. Holding back tears, frozen hands, singing to themselves, they finally make it to the car!

Five minutes sooner…they would have been diagnosed with hypothermia.

Unfortunately Liz got some bruised ribs out of the experience. 😦

So Far..So Good.

We’ve only had one race so far, but we’ve made some goals. Mike wants to podium this year, which means he wants to be in the top three in his category. I want to win the jersey for my category this year, which means I need to place first in my category.

Let’s see what happens!

Spring Break

1. I placed first in the Coyote Classic. (see previous blog).

2. I deweeded the front lawn and side yard and added some touches outside. I can’t wait to do the back yard!

3. I BBQ’d a couple of times, inclding Mike’s birthday shin dig after a Tuesday night ride. Success.

4. I finally got to get Christa out for a ride so I can officially now have another girl to ride with when Lisa has to work.

5. I went through my closet and got rid of clothes I don’t wear and organized Mike’s rummaged through mountain bike clothes.

6. I flew to Vegas to see my family.

7. I got to get a tour of my sister’s gym and pretend like I was still living in Vegas so I could get a free week’s pass. Afterwards I did an extremely hard Pilates class that kicked my butt.

8. I went shopping with my mom and sister just like old times.

9. I watched Sarah do her dance routine to “Fuego”, which is really awesome by the way.

10. I got to go to a morning session at the Las Vegas Temple. I love that temple so much. I almost started crying when I walked in. It reminded me of all the after school sessions I would go to. Never take for granted having a temple in your home town. Living in Las Cruces has reminded me of how important the temple is to me and I can’t wait til we get one closer to us!

11. I got to eat a sandwich with my dad.

12. I got to play a game of Guesstures with the whole family and see how talented Jen and Wayne are at charades.

13. I laughed really hard with my sister about silly things. It felt so good!

14. I got to sit and watch a BBC movie with my mom and enjoy chattering about England.

15. I got to sleep in A LOT!

16. I finished a book I have been trying to read for a long time!

17. I got to eat sushi with Jen, Wayne, Dave, and Laura and it was amazing!

I am so grateful to be a teacher and especially grateful for all the special people in my life!

Our First Race.

We had our first race of the New Mexico mountain bike series. It was perfect weather and Mike and I were ready to kick some behind. We had been practicing a lot (Mike a lot more than I had been)!
Mike got podium! He won third place out of forty four riders.

I got first in my category. I bumped up to 30-39, since I am turning the big 3-0 this year.

At the finish line.

Mike’s favorite part at the end, when he passed the winner of last year’s race.

All of the riders!

At the starting line…

We hope to have a great season! Next Race: Socorro.

Ten Reasons Why I Am Being A Slacker At Work…

1. Daylight Savings time is kicking my butt….I can barely function today because of lack of sleep.

2. I am so nervous about this weekend’s race. This is a very hard trail and I know I am going to biff it!

3. Spring Break officially starts tomorrow afternoon, therefore why do work?

4. I’m trying to plan out my Spring Break.

5. I’m too busy planning what to do for Mike for his birthday.

6. The kids are watching a video today, so its way easy.

7. I much rather be outside because the weather is GORGEOUS.

8. The only thing I should work on is grading papers and I hate doing that.

9. The other thing I could work on is bills and I hate doing that more than grading papers.

10. Because I don’t feel like working. 🙂

What’s Been Going On?

We have been trying to fix the Lexus to sell it to pay off the bills…no luck yet, but we are still working on it.

Matt and Kandi moved to Colorado so we helped them pack up the truck and head off on their new adventure!

We have been preparing for the Coyote Classic on March 21st…lots of people have entered..wish us luck!

Brent got a new bike similar to Mike’s..so they are both sporting an Intense!

Disneyland Silliness!

I was a little nervous taking Mike to Disneyland because I ws hoping he would have a great time like I always do….judging by the pictures…I think the mission was a positive one.

Here are some clips of the trip!

So Mike and I got to go to California last weekend and we loved it! 🙂 It was nice to be able to get out of town and I really, really missed California. We flew into John Wayne Airport and then took off to Huntington first thing. Love that place!
